The CHOICE (Choosing
Habilitation Opportunities in Community Environments) Program is
the first community based day habilitation program for individuals
with developmental disabilities at the DeKalb CSB.
While other day programs
include
community inclusion activities, CHOICE is primarily focused on non
facility-based day options. The program is intended to serve individuals
with developmental disabilities who choose an alternative approach
to day services.
Individuals
are involved in planning their daily activities. The services reflect
what the consumer wants to do not what the program has to offer.
Consumer choices are based on a variety of alternatives, and include
suggestions from the consumers, their family members and professionals
from an interdisciplinary team. Services include socialization skills
through community inclusion, daily living skills, vocational training,
and behavior supports. Since CHOICE is a community-based program,
consumers receiving either Day Support or Day Habilitation services
are involved in meaningful community activities with non-disabled
adults on a daily basis.
Community
Integrated Services
Some of the community-integrated services include volunteer work
for Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army, Wonderland Gardens, FODAC (Friends
of Disabled Adults and Children, local churches and the Food Bank.
Other individuals volunteer to do arts and crafts with senior citizens
at a local senior day care center. CHOICE has a business involved
in making gift cards and stationery and other gift items to sell
in the community. CHOICE also has a small paper shredding business.
The money generated results in a paycheck used by the consumers
for special activities, trips, etc.
